I believe yes. The death penalty makes the excecutioned a murderer and therefore as bad as the person that they are carrying out the penalty on. I believe there are other ways to punish people for crimes, and these ways could be seen as even more strict, such as a lifetime in solitary confinement, the thought of that would surely deter people from commiting crimes, paticularly in countries where the death penalty is not currently in place.

What about people like sociopaths? They don't have morals and wouldn't have a conscience about killing someone. If you ever let them out of prison, they very well may kill again. You could put them in prison forever, but wouldn't that kind of be a waste of the taxpayer's money to keep someone alive just for the sake of punishment?
I think if someone is going to be kept in prison for a long time, the goal shouldn't be punishment but rehabilitation. That way if they are to be freed, they will likely not murder again.

I think the reason why the world is so unruly [mainly the US] today is because so many people are offended with harsh measures of punishment. People wouldn't commit much crime if it meant the sacrifice of their life. There are just some people who won't ever learn just by putting a few words on their permanent record then locking them up in a place with free shelter and food.
