This question is never going to have a definite answer. Most of the people debating it (and by that I mean the ones with the power to change the law) are either men or if they are woman then they cannot hope to understand all the many different circumstances affecting this decision. Not everyone is religious, not everybody is married and not everyone is financially able to support a baby. Some people are not even mentally able for the responsibility that would come with having a child. A lot of pregnancy's are unplanned but that doesn't mean the woman should be forced to changer her life and go through with the unwanted pregnancy. Protected sex does not mean foil proof - accidents can still happen. I really do think it's the woman's (and the potential father's) choice. Personally if I was pregnant right now I would not even contemplate becoming a mother. I know I'm not ready for that and I must admit I would prefer to have an abortion rather than go through the trauma of a pregnancy and then give the child up for adoption. But that's just me personally. I'm glad abortion is an option but I think the most important thing of all is that the people who matter (i.e. the couple who made the baby) are the ones who make the choice. The law should not get involved as it just makes a hard decision even harder (far more young woman would have to resort to back-street abortions which are very, very dangerous).

Very well said! I don't see why there has to be a law about abortions. If someone thinks it's wrong, then nobody is forcing them to get an abortion...

Agree with gems I'm pro-abortion, I deffinately think it should be an option for a pregnancy that would result in a negatively abnormal child, AND pregnancies that are simply unwanted. I don't think of human life as sacred, I don't see our race through rose-tinted glasses and because of our seemingly unstoppable population increase, I'm not the biggest fan of popping sprogs at the best of times, let alone when the parents can't care for it and don't want it. I think there are things worse than death (probably most things actually) so of course not getting pregnant in the first place is better but unwanted pregancies are usually (and i'm deffinately not saying always) the result of the prospective parent's irresponsibility and I certaintly wouldn't want to be born into many of these families. Of course the foetus can't choose whether it wants to be born or not, but it should be recognised that you are decided it's future for it, even if you choose NOT to abort. But maybe that's just a pessimistic outlook of life newboy, you mentioned a foetus having "life" as a consideration. A foetus is of course "alive" technically, it's cells go through all the activities living things do the classify as "living" but i dont think being alive and being human should be confused with being conscious and being a person. a foetus doesn't have hopes or memories, it doesnt have fear or love or morality. that's not to say it's automatically fine to kill them - as soon as they can feel pain, as soon as they can suffer then obviously it's a bad thing (although i'd still maintain doesn't sway abortion into being a bad choice altogether)

Neither do a lot of US politicians, can we do a late-late-term abortion on them? ;D
But on a more serious note, I'm kind of sick of this issue. US media beats it to death. Who gives a damn if someone wants an abortion? If you have something against abortion, then don't get one. But if someone else wants or in fact needs one, leave them alone.
What also gets me is how the US Republican Party (conservatives supposedly), claim they are all for the government staying out of peoples personal lives. Yet when it comes to abortion, many of them would be in favor of passing national laws against it.
Stupid hypocrites...

But if someone else wants or in fact needs one, leave them alone. it's not really the kind of issue you can just keep to yourself if youre anti-abortion though, since it involves a third party (the foetus). to say each woman should make her own decision about keeping a baby is like saying every dog owner should make his/her own decision over whether to break its legs or not - if you want to break your own dogs legs its fine but if you dont agree with animal cruelty, dont break you own dogs legs. a stretched analogy, i know, but hopefully you'll see what i'm getting at
